How to Prepare for a Dance Audition

What to bring, what to wear, how to learn combinations fast and what directors look for.

Whether it is a summer intensive, a college BFA program, a company or a Broadway open call, preparation follows the same principles.

Before the day

Read the call carefully (age, height, styles, materials). Prepare a headshot, résumé and dance photos if requested, and rehearse any solo until it is automatic. Sleep and eat well the week before.

What to wear

Fitted, simple attire in a flattering solid color so the panel can see your lines; hair secured away from the face. Bring every shoe you might need (ballet, pointe, jazz, character heels, tap, sneakers).

In the room

Stand where you can see and be seen, mark combinations full-out as soon as possible, and keep performing even after a mistake. Directors look for technique, musicality, quick pickup, presence and the ability to take a correction.
