Description

Partial journal of a whaling voyage to the Atlantic Ocean. Includes descriptions of whales seen or taken, an accident, injuries, and a death at sea. The keeper includes a detailed description of a whale smashing a whaleboat and injuring a whaler (Albert Wood) in March 1849. The keeper includes a copy of Wood's obituary in the journal, noting that Wood survived the incident with the whale. The keeper also references music being played onboad and dancing in several entries. A large portion of the journal has been used as a scrapbook for newspaper clippings. Some of the clippings are relevant to the voyage and appear to have been included by the captain. Whaling grounds include the Brazil Banks and False Banks grounds
